During the early years of electricity, direct current (shorthanded as DC) was the standard in the U.S. But there was one problem. Direct current is not easily converted to higher or lower voltages. Tesla believed that alternating current (or AC) was the solution to this problem.
When it comes to efficiency and performance, electric cars that use AC motors have the advantage of a better grip, especially on rough roads. They have more acceleration and can be used for longer and tougher trips. Compared to DC motors, the advantages of AC motors are high efficiency, less maintenance, higher reliability, and regenerative capability that enables braking energy to be returned to the batteries. The only disadvantage of using an AC motor is that it can be more expensive compared to DC motors.
